Survival of the fittest is often used interchangeably with the term Natural Selection. It implies that any organism with the right adaptation whether it is behavioral, physiological, or physical can survive long enough to pass its genes on to future offspring and generations.
History[]
Darwin did not coin this phrase, but he did use it in his 5th edition of his book "On the Origin of Species" in 1869. However a British economist by the name of Herbert Spencer read an early edition of Darwin's book and drew the parallels between his theory and Natural Selection and came up with the phrase in 1864.
