Fitness refers to the ability of an organism to survive and pass on its genes to the next generation.

Types of Fitness[]

According to S. Hardwick (2012), " (Direct Fitness:  the genes contributed to the next generation directly by reproduction. Direct fitness is measured by the number of surviving offspring produced by the organism.

Indirect Fitness:  the genes contributed to the next generation indirectly by by helping relatives. Indirect fitness is measured by the number of surviving offspring produced by relatives that wouldn't have been produced without the assistance of the organism.

Inclusive Fitness:  the sum of an individual's direct and indirect fitness."
