Summary Edit

Galapagos tortoises are another example of adaptive radiation. Giant tortoises arrived on 1 or 2 of the oldest islands in the Galapagos several million years ago, and by currents (and their ability to float), tortoises moved from older islands to new islands and developed different characteristics based on the ecology of the islands as well as food availability. Carapace shape as well as length of neck are 2 major morphological differences between Galapagos tortoise species. Scientists have identified at least 15 different "taxa" of Galapagos tortoises.
