Olduvai Gorge is considered one of the most significant paleoanthropological sites in the world.
Research and Discoveries []
Wilhelm Kattwinkle was the first to discover hominid fossils in the Gorge in 1913. However, it is Mary and Louis Leakey who are responsible for the majority of the hominid fossil discoveries at Olduvai. Their work, combined with the work of several others, convinced most paleontologists that humans evolved in Africa. Fossils from 4 different hominids have been found there, as well as over 2,000 tools and stone flakes.
Former Residents[]
Fossil evidence shows that area has been occupied by Homo habilis, Paranthropus boisei, Homo erectus and Homo sapiens.
