Synthetic Theory of Evolution is a term coined by J. Huxley in 1942 in his book "Evolution: A Modern Synthesis" It combined many scientific fields and the rediscovery of Mendelian genetics was a key foundation in the theory.  Though through the expansion of such things as paleobiology the controlling forces of evolution have been shown to be much more varied then people like Huxley had theorized.
